Senior citizens threaten hunger strike in Anand

Senior citizens in Anand have threatened to go on hunger strike in support of a cancer patient, whose deposits are locked in Charotar Nagarik Sahakari Bank (CNSB) ever since the bank went under liquidation.

Forty-six-year old Subhash Agrawal, a resident of Borsad, has been waiting for deposits worth Rs 8.5 lakh to be released from the bank. Presently, Agrawal is undergoing treatment for cancer.

“His family has already spent huge money towards his treatment at private hospitals in Ahmedabad and Anand. Now, they need these deposits to be released so that they don’t face any financial problems towards the treatment,” Balwant Patel, who is leading the agitation, said on Friday.

“We have decided to go on indefinite hunger strike in front of CNSB, if Subhashbhai does not get his cheque before February 15,” said Patel after a meeting of senior citizens, who are waiting for their deposits to be cleared from banks and credit societies presently under liquidation.

Earlier, the senior citizens had threatened to go on strike on January 31, but they postponed their plan after they were assured by the bank officials that their demands are being looked into on priority basis.
