Blimpie Featured in the New York Times

Scottsdale, AZ (May 13, 2013) – Blimpie, America’s favorite sub shop, was featured in the May 8th, 2013 New York Times article entitled “With Bleak Job Prospects, Parents and Their Children Buy Into Franchises.”  Millie Vazquez and her sons, Julio and Alvaro, multi-unit franchisees who own three New Jersey Blimpie locations, were the Blimpie representatives quoted in the story written by Ian Mount. Mount’s story focused on the growing trend of parent/child teams in the world of franchising.   Experts quoted in the story suggested that poor job prospects are making the idea of business ownership appealing to entrepreneurial parent/child combos.   Franchising, specifically, is important to these parent/child teams because they “have an entrepreneurial urge but not the experience or confidence to start a business alone.”   Franchising is so attractive, in fact, Rick Bisio, leading FranChoice business consultant and Amazon-best selling writer of “The Educated Franchisee,” said that “10 to 20 percent of the franchisees he places start as parent-child pairs.”

The Vasquez family was profiled as one of the parent-child teams that have endured tough times and discovered ways to balance their personal and professional lives.   With the help of Mike Sarao, New Jersey-based Blimpie Area Developer, Millie and her sons were able to mitigate the issues they faced early in their joint ownership, like creating off-menu sandwiches, and now operate a location that the New York Times labeled “a gold mine.”
