Depression and Grief in Seniors: Part 5 – How to Recognize Depression

Symptoms of depression in your aging loved ones might be different from depression in younger people. Depression in older adults can cause memory problems, confusion, social withdrawal, loss of appetite, loss of sleep, irritability, and sometimes even delusions and hallucinations. Naturally, you can see why depression is sometimes confused with dementia or the normal aging process. Occasionally depressed individuals even show physical symptoms such as an upset stomach.
